It’s already December, Christmas is only 3 Mondays away and the New Year is quite literally, just around the corner (not that I am counting or anything)! It is going to be the busiest time of the year for the Retailers with an estimated $10 billion going to be spent on Christmas gifts and food alone! With that in mind, let’s take a look back at what has happened in the industry in the past year!
It hasn’t been all fluffy bunnies and butterflies for the industry though, with (too) many iconic retailers closing or have closed down in 2016. Dick Smith being one of them. Masters is in the process of shutting down their stores after 5 years of trading. Pumpkin Patch are also in the process of liquidating though after 25 years of trading! Man to Man, Laura Ashley and Ice Designs have all also called it a day in 2016. This equates to roughly 11,000 people out of a job by the end of this year and early next year!
But, it hasn’t been all doom and gloom! More and more international Powerhouses are opening up stores in Australia, Sephora being one of the biggest to hit Melbourne. Zara, H&M, Muji and Uniqlo continued their expansion while some Aussie businesses multiplied their portfolios. Even shopping centres have been expanding; most notably and most recently, Chadstone Shopping Centre, unveiling their $600 million project. Pretty impressive if I say so myself. And judging by the amount of people that were at the shopping centre at 7am, lining up and waiting in anticipation for the grand opening and reopening of their favourite stores, let’s hope they have “#nailedit”.
So with the excitement of Christmas and New Year, let’s all be merry and celebrate but also remember those who may have to start back at square one… job hunting… (*insert shameless promotion here…*) If you are one of those people looking for their next role in retail, please give me a call or send me an email! Merry Christmas and happy spending.
